Gibbs is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Gibbs Technologies.
Gibbs is one of New Zealand’s most successful entrepreneurs.
In his early days he studied engineering and economics and became
a New Zealand diplomat in London.
On his return to New Zealand in the 1960’s he went into
manufacturing and has manufactured a very wide range of products
(bricks, brassieres, television sets, stoves, refrigeration). He
has run his own merchant bank defending companies against hostile
takeovers and undertaking takeovers of his own. He was a half owner
of New Zealand’s largest car dealership chain. He put together
the management buy-out of the country’s biggest publicly listed
freight, courier and security company and retained a fifty per cent
share in it. He was a driving force behind the introduction of Sky,
the only pay television service in New Zealand.
His biggest project was to co-lead the syndicate that purchased
New Zealand Telecom and to undertake its complete restructuring
resulting in an enormous increase in productivity, much reduced
prices for the consumer and a share price that quadrupled in five
years.
He has also undertaken projects for the New Zealand Government
to advise on restructuring the public hospital system and to restructure
and privatise the massive government owned forestry sector.
Since 1999 he has been resident in the United Kingdom and lives
in London on the Thames.
